Frigatebird Courtship 101
The gular pouch, or the inflatable tomato you see on a male frigatebird’s throat is only one of the many interesting features about this maritime genus of birds. The sexual dimorphism aside, they’re also nasty kleptoparasites, stealing prey from other seabirds like terns and albatrosses. Owing to their anatomy, frigatebirds are unable to take off from the water, so landing on the sea would mean that they eventually drown! Victims of their kleptoparasitic behaviour sure would say, “serves them right!”
The cartoon appears in my column with Roundglass Sustain, which has an archive of more than 200 Green Humour cartoons and comics that you can read here.
