The Palm Civet is a common nocturnal animal found across India, which is rapidly losing habitat and refuge as our cities urbanize. In Kolkata, they are now forced to resort to scavenging on kitchen scraps, often bringing the in conflict with apartment dwellers. Nature Mates India is one of the organizations working to rescue and rehabilitate civets, as well as other wild animals.

(For those unfamiliar with Bengali, ‘Kakima’ means ‘aunt’, and ‘Shutki’ is a dried fish/shrimp Bengali delicacy, associated with an overpowering aroma but the taste of which connoisseurs swear by!)
