In October last year, I was at the International Bycatch Meeting in Malaga, Spain, hosted by the IUCN and ACCOBAMS (in preparation for the book ‘A Day Out with Delphie’) where the now viral issue of the boat-attacking Orca pod of the Iberian coast had been broached, and scientists were debating the best solutions to manage the issue. While a special team has now been appointed to design measures based on orca behaviour, the media has done its part, as usual, by sensationalizing the matter and blowing it out of proportion.
On World Oceans Week, here’s a little tutorial from Orcas about understanding ‘grey’. The comic appears in my column with The Hindu Sunday Magazine.
The Boat Ramming Orcas of Iberia
I find the whole idea of what's going on with the orcas very interesting and maybe it is play but when you think about them in tanks all over the United States and various other countries and contained for over 30 or 40 years makes you wonder if they aren't telepathically communicating with each other and saying let's make sure that people understand that we are aware of what's happening to us. I don't know that I would say it's revenge or an attack but it seems to me with the intelligence that they have and I have a friend whose tribe is represented by the orca who believes that the orca is actually saying this is my world and I want you to understand that you're compromising it. You might have to do another animation for it but that's a superb piece of work as always Rohan. I'm glad to have found you up here
